About Balungile Emmah Gumede
Balungile Emmah Gumede is a South African-born singer, actress, and musical performer known for her
deep soulfulness and dynamic artistry. Her career spans television, theatre, global musical productions, and
humanitarian efforts across continents.
Biography
Balungile's journey began in Durban's gospel choirs, where her love for music and performance first took
root. She gained national attention in the short film 'A Good Wife' for E.TV and starred alongside legendary
South African opera and jazz icon Professor Sibongile Khumalo, who also mentored her.
Her talents led her to the stage in major productions like Africa Umoja, The Wedding Party, and the
Netherlands tour of African Mamas - a tribute to Miriam Makeba. In 2012, her rising prominence earned her a
feature in O, The Oprah Magazine South Africa.
Balungile has held roles on television (*eKasi: Our Stories*, Single Mothers) and on international stages.
She has been a key part of Disney's The Lion King in Hamburg since 2013, currently performing as a
Singer Swing, covering the roles of Shenzi and Sarabi.
